Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive: would, could, if I were)

The Konjunktiv II is the German form for things that are not real: wishes, imagined situations and unreal conditions. It also makes requests more polite. It usually matches English would, could or if I were: Ich würde gern kommen. (I would like to come.) Wenn ich reich wäre, … (If I were rich, …)

The present: würde + infinitive

For most verbs, German uses würde + infinitive at the end of the clause, like English would + verb.

PersonwürdeExample
ichwürdeIch würde gern mitkommen.
duwürdestWürdest du mir helfen?
er, sie, eswürdeEr würde nie lügen.
wirwürdenWir würden gern bleiben.
ihrwürdetWas würdet ihr tun?
sie, SiewürdenWürden Sie das Fenster öffnen?

Verbs with their own forms

sein, haben and the modal verbs almost always use their own Konjunktiv II form instead of würde. It is built from the Präteritum, usually with an umlaut: war → wäre, hatte → hätte, konnte → könnte. mögen becomes möchte. sollen and wollen have no umlaut, so they look like the Präteritum: ich sollte can mean I should or I was supposed to.

ichwärehättekönntemüsstedürftesollte
duwär(e)sthättestkönntestmüsstestdürftestsolltest

wirwärenhättenkönntenmüsstendürftensollten
ihrwär(e)thättetkönntetmüsstetdürftetsolltet
sie, Siewärenhättenkönntenmüsstendürftensollten

A few common irregular verbs also have their own forms: gehen → ginge, kommen → käme, geben → gäbe (es gäbe = there would be), wissen → wüsste. ginge and käme are mostly written; gäbe and wüsste are common in speech too. For weak verbs the Konjunktiv II looks like the Präteritum (ich machte), so würde machen is used instead.

Common mistake

Wenn ich reich war, würde ich ein Haus kaufen. is wrong; correct: Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen.

English often says If I was rich. German needs the Konjunktiv II form: wäre. war is only the real past.

The past: hätte / wäre + participle

For unreal things in the past, German uses hätte or wäre + past participle, like English would have done (or had done in an if clause). The choice between hätte and wäre is the same as in the Perfekt.

Ich hätte dir gern geholfen.I would have liked to help you.

Wir wären gern länger geblieben. We would have liked to stay longer.

Wenn ich mich besser vorbereitet hätte, hätte ich eine bessere Note bekommen. If I had prepared better, I would have got a better mark.

When it is used

  • Polite requests: Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me?) – Würden Sie bitte das Fenster schließen? (Would you close the window, please?) – Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. (I'd like a coffee.)
  • Wishes, often with doch, nur or bloß: Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! (If only I had more time!) – Hätte ich nur nicht so viel gegessen! (If only I hadn't eaten so much!)
  • Unreal conditions: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dir helfen.; see conditional clauses.
  • Advice: Du solltest mehr schlafen. (You should sleep more.) – An deiner Stelle würde ich das nicht machen. (If I were you, I wouldn't do that.)
  • Comparisons with als ob (as if): Er tut so, als ob er nichts gehört hätte. (He acts as if he hadn't heard anything.)
  • Things that nearly happened: Fast wäre ich ertrunken. (I nearly drowned.)

Dürfte ich Sie etwas fragen?Could I ask you something?

Würden Sie uns bitte drei Tassen Kaffee bringen?Would you bring us three cups of coffee, please?

Das wäre sehr nett von Ihnen! That would be very kind of you!

Wenn wir doch in Urlaub fahren könnten! If only we could go on holiday!

Beinahe hätte ich ein Haus gekauft.I nearly bought a house.
