Futur I (Future Tense with werden)
The Futur I is formed with the verb werden and an infinitive at the end of the clause: Ich werde dir helfen. (I will help you.) In everyday German, the future is often expressed with the present tense and a time expression instead: Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin. (I'm going to Berlin tomorrow.)
The forms
| Person | werden | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ich | werde | Ich werde das Buch lesen. |
| du | wirst | Du wirst es sehen. |
| er, sie, es | wird | Es wird regnen. |
| wir | werden | Wir werden pünktlich sein. |
| ihr | werdet | Ihr werdet es schaffen. |
| sie, Sie | werden | Sie werden bald kommen. |
In a subordinate clause, werden goes to the very end: Ich glaube, dass es morgen regnen wird.
Common mistake
Ich will dir morgen helfen. (meant as "I'll help you tomorrow") is wrong; correct: Ich werde dir morgen helfen.
German will is not the future. It comes from wollen and means want to: Ich will dir helfen means I want to help you. The future uses werden.
Common mistake
Ich werde lesen das Buch. is wrong; correct: Ich werde das Buch lesen.
In English the infinitive follows will directly. In German the infinitive goes to the end of the clause.
Present tense for the future
For plans and arrangements with a time expression such as morgen or nächste Woche, the present tense is normal: Ich rufe dich morgen an. (I'll call you tomorrow.) – Nächste Woche fahren wir nach Wien. The Futur I is used mainly for predictions, promises and assumptions, or when no time expression makes the future clear.
When the Futur I is used
- Predictions: Es wird regnen. (It's going to rain.)
- Promises and firm intentions: Ich werde dir helfen. (I will help you.)
- Assumptions about the present, often with wohl: Er wird wohl noch im Büro sein. (He's probably still at the office.)
- Firm instructions: Du wirst jetzt in dein Zimmer gehen! (You will go to your room now!)
Der Himmel ist grau. Es wird bald regnen. The sky is grey. It's going to rain soon.
Er ist sehr müde. Er wird gleich einschlafen. He's very tired. He'll fall asleep any moment now.
Keine Sorge, ich werde dich nicht vergessen.Don't worry, I won't forget you.
Wo ist Anna? – Sie wird wohl noch in der Schule sein.Where's Anna? – She's probably still at school.
Nächstes Jahr werden wir ein Haus kaufen.Next year we're going to buy a house.
