Futur II (Future Perfect: wird … gemacht haben)

The Futur II is the German future perfect: Ich werde es gemacht haben. (I will have done it.) It is formed with werden + past participle + haben or sein. The choice between haben and sein is the same as in the Perfekt. In everyday German it is rare: it is mostly used for assumptions about the past.

The forms

Personlesen (with haben)ankommen (with sein)
ichwerde gelesen habenwerde angekommen sein
duwirst gelesen habenwirst angekommen sein
er, sie, eswird gelesen habenwird angekommen sein
wirwerden gelesen habenwerden angekommen sein
ihrwerdet gelesen habenwerdet angekommen sein
sie, Siewerden gelesen habenwerden angekommen sein

Common mistake

In English will have stays together before the participle. In German only werde is in second position; the participle and haben go to the very end.

Finished by a time in the future

The Futur II says that something will be finished by a certain time in the future, often with bis (by). In everyday German the Perfekt with a time expression is more common: Bis Freitag habe ich das Buch gelesen.

By Friday I will have read the book.

By 2030 I will have finished my degree.

Next year we will have lived here for ten years.

When you get back, the train will already have left.

Assumptions about the past

The Futur II often expresses a guess about something that has already happened, usually with wohl or sicher. English uses must have or will have. For guesses about the present, see Futur I.

Er ist noch nicht da. Er wird wohl den Bus verpasst haben. He isn't here yet. He must have missed the bus.

She'll certainly have read the message by now.

Die Kinder werden wohl müde gewesen sein. The children must have been tired.
