Viewing a flat
Elif and Murat are viewing a flat to rent. There are costs the advert did not mention, so they need to ask about the basic rent ("Kaltmiete"), the extra costs and the deposit – and two other people are interested in the flat as well.

Language note
False friend: die Kaution is a deposit, not a caution (that would be die Vorsicht or die Warnung). And German asks how high the rent is (Wie hoch ist die Miete?) where English asks how much. Also, drei Zimmer counts the living room too, but not the kitchen or the bathroom: a 3-Zimmer-Wohnung usually has two bedrooms.
Culture note
The Kaltmiete in adverts is the rent without the extra costs; what you actually pay the landlord each month is the Warmmiete (electricity usually comes on top). By law, the deposit (Kaution) can be at most three months' cold rent, and tenants may pay it in three instalments. Do not decide on a flat before asking Was ist in den Nebenkosten enthalten?
