In der Apotheke

I've forgotten the word

Enis has a headache, but he cannot remember the word "Kopfschmerzen". He tries to explain with gestures.

Apothekerin

Guten Tag, kann ich Ihnen helfen?Hello, can I help you?

Enis

Ja… mein Kopf… tut weh.Yes… my head… hurts.

Apothekerin

Ah, Kopfschmerzen. Seit wann denn?Ah, a headache. How long have you had it?

Enis

Seit heute Morgen. Ich habe schlecht geschlafen.Since this morning. I slept badly.

Apothekerin

Haben Sie Allergien gegen Medikamente? Are you allergic to any medicines?

Enis

Ich verstehe das Wort nicht.I don't understand that word.

Apothekerin

Macht nichts — ich meine: Hatten Sie schon mal Probleme mit Tabletten?Never mind – I mean: have you ever had problems with any tablets?

Enis

Nein, glaube ich nicht. No, I don't think so.

Apothekerin

Dann empfehle ich diese hier. Zweimal täglich eine, nicht auf nüchternen Magen. Then I'd recommend these. One twice a day, not on an empty stomach.

Enis

Super, danke. Sie waren sehr geduldig.Great, thanks. You've been very patient.

Language note

Kopfschmerzen is plural in German (literally "head pains"): Ich habe Kopfschmerzen means "I have a headache". When the noun escapes you, Mein Kopf tut weh (my head hurts) works just as well. And seit heute Morgen: with seit, German uses the present tense where English uses the present perfect: Ich habe seit heute Morgen Kopfschmerzen = I have had a headache since this morning.

Culture note

In Germany, even simple painkillers are sold only in pharmacies (Apotheken), not in supermarkets or in Drogerien (shops selling toiletries and household goods), and pharmacists are serious advisers – do not hesitate to ask. Saying Ich verstehe das Wort nicht is nothing to be embarrassed about; it is good communication.

Lifesaver phrases

Ich verstehe das Wort nicht.I don't understand that word.
