Das Vorstellungsgespräch

A job interview

Serkan, a trained electrical technician, has a job interview at a building services company. He is asked about a six-month gap in his CV – and needs to answer honestly and strategically.

Frau Albrecht

Herr Yildiz, schön, dass Sie da sind. Erzählen Sie doch kurz, was Sie bisher gemacht haben.Mr Yildiz, it's good to have you here. Why don't you tell us briefly what you've done so far?

Serkan

Gerne. Certainly. I trained as an electrical technician in Izmir and then worked for six years at a medium-sized company, most recently as a shift supervisor.

Frau Albrecht

Warum möchten Sie ausgerechnet bei uns anfangen? Why do you want to start with us in particular?

Serkan

For one thing, because your company is strong in building services – exactly my field. For another, I read that you offer your staff further training. That matters to me, because I want to work here in the long term.

Frau Albrecht

In Ihrem Lebenslauf fehlt das letzte halbe Jahr. Was haben Sie in der Zeit gemacht? The last six months are missing from your CV. What did you do during that time?

Serkan

I'll be honest: I concentrated on moving to Germany and on the language. I took an intensive course and passed the B1 exam; at the moment I'm preparing for B2.

Frau Albrecht

It shows – your German is already very good. How do you deal with it when you don't understand something in your day-to-day work?

Serkan

Then I ask – better one question too many than one too few. When it comes to safety, there must be no misunderstandings.

Frau Albrecht

Gute Einstellung. Was stellen Sie sich beim Gehalt vor? That's the right attitude. What are your salary expectations?

Serkan

I've looked into the usual salaries in the industry. I'm thinking of about 3,400 euros gross a month, but I'm open to an overall package that includes further training.

Frau Albrecht

Das liegt in unserem Rahmen. Hätten Sie denn noch Fragen an uns? That's within our range. Do you have any questions for us?

Serkan

Yes, two: what does the induction period look like? And does the team work mostly on building sites or in the workshop?

zum einen … zum anderen (for one thing … for another), Da bin ich ehrlich (I'll be honest), Wie gehen Sie damit um, wenn …? (How do you deal with it when …?), Das liegt in unserem Rahmen (That's within our range). Careful with eine Prüfung bestehen: it means to pass an exam. To take an exam is eine Prüfung machen or ablegen. And Es darf keine Missverständnisse geben means there must not be any: nicht dürfen = must not, but nicht müssen = do not have to (Sie müssen nicht kommen = you don't have to come).

Culture note

In Germany, having no questions at the end of an interview can come across as a lack of interest – always prepare at least one.
