Am Telefon: Termin verschieben
Moving an appointment
Enis is waiting for a job interview. The company calls to change the time – but at the new time, Enis has his German course.
Guten Tag, hier ist Frau Meier von TechSolutions. Spreche ich mit Herrn Demir?Hello, this is Ms Meier from TechSolutions. Am I speaking to Mr Demir?
Ja, am Apparat. Es geht um den Termin morgen, oder?Yes, speaking. It's about tomorrow's appointment, isn't it?
Genau. Leider müssen wir den Termin auf 14 Uhr verschieben. Passt Ihnen das? That's right. Unfortunately we have to move the appointment to 2 pm. Does that suit you?
14 Uhr… da habe ich einen Deutschkurs. Könnten wir den Termin auf 16 Uhr verlegen?2 pm… I have a German class then. Could we move it to 4 pm?
16 Uhr… ja, das geht auch. Ich trage es ein.4 pm… yes, that works too. I'll put it in the diary.
Super. Vielen Dank für Ihr Verständnis.Great. Thank you very much for your understanding.
Sehr gerne. Dann bis morgen um 16 Uhr. Auf Wiederhören! You're very welcome. See you tomorrow at 4 pm, then. Goodbye!

Language note
False friend: der Termin is an appointment, not a term. When a caller asks for you by name, the reply is Ja, am Apparat ("Yes, speaking"), and on the phone Germans say goodbye with Auf Wiederhören ("until we hear each other again") instead of Auf Wiedersehen. Könnten wir den Termin auf … verlegen? is a polite, professional way to suggest a new time.
Lifesaver phrases
Könnten wir einen anderen Termin finden?Could we find another time?
Das passt mir leider nicht.I'm afraid that doesn't suit me.
Ich rufe später zurück.I'll call back later.
