Language note
Er ist zu klein: der Pullover is masculine, so the jumper is er, and ihn in Gibt es ihn auch in Rot? English says it for every object; German uses er, sie or es according to the noun. (Es war ein Geschenk is different: with sein + a noun, es or das points to the thing in general, whatever its gender: Das ist ein Pullover.) And a false friend: a gift is das Geschenk. Das Gift means poison.
Culture note
umtauschen means swapping an item for another one; zurückgeben means returning it for your money back. In Germany, shops do not have to take back items bought in the shop if nothing is wrong with them; an exchange is usually a goodwill gesture, which is why shops normally ask for the receipt (Kassenbon). Online purchases are different: there you normally have 14 days to withdraw from the contract.
