Im Café
The wrong order arrives
Enis is in a café with his friend Can. The waiter brings him a hot chocolate, but Enis ordered a coffee.
Einmal heißer Kakao und ein Stück Apfelkuchen. Guten Appetit! One hot chocolate and a slice of apple cake. Enjoy!
Entschuldigung… Ich habe aber einen Latte macchiato bestellt.Excuse me… but I ordered a latte macchiato.
Oh, das tut mir leid! Ich habe mich vertan. Ihr Latte macchiato kommt sofort.Oh, I'm sorry! My mistake. Your latte macchiato is coming right away.
Siehst du, Enis — auf Deutsch zu bestellen ist das eine, verstanden zu werden das andere.See, Enis – ordering in German is one thing, being understood is another.
Hier, der Latte. Der Kakao geht aufs Haus. Here's your latte. The hot chocolate is on the house.
Oh, das ist nett. Vielen Dank!Oh, that's kind. Thank you very much!

Language note
aufs Haus works just like English on the house. Einmal heißer Kakao is how orders are called out: einmal, zweimal … means one, two … of something. When ordering yourself, Ich hätte gern einen Latte macchiato (I'd like a latte macchiato) is polite and simple.
Culture note
In Germany it is normal to point out a wrong order politely; the waiter apologises, and sometimes the drink is aufs Haus. There is no need to drink it in silence.
Lifesaver phrases
Ich glaube, das ist nicht meine Bestellung.I don't think this is my order.
Ich habe … bestellt.I ordered …
Das ist kein Problem. That's no problem.
