Possessivpronomen im Nominativ (Possessive Pronouns: mine, yours)
When a possessive such as mein stands on its own without a noun, it works like English mine, yours, his and hers. In German it still shows the gender and number of the noun it replaces, so it takes the endings of der, die, das: Das ist nicht dein Schlüssel, das ist meiner. (That isn't your key, it's mine.)
The forms in the nominative
| Person | der (masculine) | das (neuter) | die (feminine, plural) | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | meiner | meins | meine | mine |
| du | deiner | deins | deine | yours |
| er, es | seiner | seins | seine | his, its |
| sie | ihrer | ihrs | ihre | hers, theirs |
| wir | unserer | unseres | unsere | ours |
| ihr | eurer | eures | eure | yours |
| Sie | Ihrer | Ihrs | Ihre | yours (polite) |
In the neuter, meins, deins, seins and ihrs are the everyday forms; meines, deines, seines and ihres are more formal. Both are correct.
Examples
Meine Wohnung ist in Köln. Wo ist deine? My flat is in Cologne. Where's yours?
Mein Hund ist sehr groß. Wie groß ist deiner? My dog is very big. How big is yours?
Mein Zimmer ist blau. Welche Farbe hat deins? My room is blue. What colour is yours?
Unser Lehrer spricht vier Sprachen. Wie viele spricht eurer? Our teacher speaks four languages. How many does yours speak?
Wem gehört der Schirm? – Das ist meiner.Whose umbrella is this? – It's mine.
Common mistake
Ist das dein Buch? – Ja, das ist mein. is wrong; correct: Ist das dein Buch? – Ja, das ist meins.
English mine has one form, but in German the pronoun needs the ending of the noun it replaces: das Buch → meins. Another option is Das gehört mir. (That belongs to me.)
Other cases
In the other cases the standalone forms also take the endings of der, die, das: Ich habe meinen Schal vergessen. Kannst du mir deinen leihen? (I've forgotten my scarf. Can you lend me yours?) – Mit meiner Kamera geht es nicht, aber mit deiner. (It doesn't work with my camera, but it does with yours.) The same pattern is used for einer, eine, eins and keiner, keine, keins without a noun: Hast du einen Stift? – Ja, ich habe einen.
